Whether rigged weedless or wacky there is something about the benign action of a senko that bass cannot resist. The most consistent bait day in and day out has been a Senko. Few things beat the exhilarating strike on a topwater. A topwater bait is normally the first bait tried each day. When leaving the ramp each day we have as many as six to eight different kinds and colors of baits tied on never knowing which one will be the real deal for this day. The smaller version of the skinny dipper, the little dipper, works magic on the abundance of small bass at this time. The better colors have been California 420, Houdini and Watermelon. A skinny dipper will still pick up quality-sized fish, although small bass will attack it too. Another favorite, the Gun Fish by Lucky Craft, is a walking type bait that drives bass crazy. The bait of choice is a Boy Howdy in Smoky Joe color. There is a daily early morning topwater bite. Anglers are excited about Lake Okeechobee’s future fishery. ![]() ![]() The high water has also opened up holes behind the outer wall of the lake where many of the bass and panfish are holding.Īnglers fishing artificial baits are having a heyday. The higher water level has pushed the fish further into the marsh areas and making the entire lake accessible to all anglers. An abundance of rain has Lake Okeechobee’s water level at 14.73 feet, nearly three feet higher than at this time last year.
